Exercise
Why discuss exercise on a cosmetic medicine site? Because it helps you look better and feel better. Of course.

Here at Peach you can't buy an exercise program, but we include some words about exercise because it is such an important part of any plan to look and feel better and get more out of life.

Here are a few tips we have found helpful

  • Make it fun. Very few people can sustain interest in a voluntary and unpaid activity if it is not fun. If you can't make it fun, make it a part of some grander plan or goal. For example, those who play team sports will turn up to training and endure all manner of discomfort both training and playing if they feel that their efforts form part of a plan to win a tounament. Others will endure similarly participating in martial arts as they find themselves swept along with the culture and discipline associated with these activities. So, get engrossed in the mental and social aspects of the exercise, and you're more likely to stick with it.
  • Make a commitment to someone. So often we are better at keeping appointments with others than we are at keeping appointments with ourselves. So, consider getting a personal trainer, and agree to pay a cancellation fee if you don't turn up to training. This will make you turn up, and you'll benefit.
  • We would suggest that you optimise your food quality and address any medical conditions prior to embarking on a new exercise regime. See your GP or see Dr Mahony
  • Variety. Here again a trainer can help. Also, take advantage of your growing fitness by PLAYING: skip, dance, play with children. Show off your flexibility and energy.
  • If you are jogging or cycling, it's not a bad idea to ensure you always have enough breath to talk as you jog or cycle. That way you won't be pushing yourself too hard. Jog with a friend, and chat as you go.

We have a couple of DON'Ts as well

  • DON'T think that by exercising you will be able to lose fat from a specific area of your anatomy without losing fat elsewhere as well. It doesn't work like that. We will regularly see patients who say "I am a good weight for my height but I still have fat on my hips. If I lose any more weight I look too gaunt in the face and I lose too much bust. Can I exercise to lose weight from my hips without losing shape elsewhere?" The short answer is no. IN such a situation you should consult us about treatments to remove specifically the excess fat from the area bothering you.
  • DON'T overdo it. Gym junkies and marathon runners become gaunt in the face. Excessive exercise leads to overproduction of free radicals and can be ageing in its own right. Knee osteoarthritis is not fun. Photoageing of facial skin associated with endless laps of Centennial Park or Bondi Beach is not a good look either.
  • DON'T forget to have fun.
