Agent B
Our anti-wrinkle injection is a natural protein made by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. For twenty years (goodness: didn't those years fly!) it has been used to successfully treat lines around the eyes and forehead, by its direct effect of profoundly relaxing the muscles that cause the lines to form. You may have frown lines that give you a worried look, or perhaps years of laughter have given you crows feet. Anti-wrinkle injections will relax the facial muscles responsible for these wrinkles. Because muscle tension is implicated in tension headaches and some migraines, anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat these conditions also in certain instances.

Agent B

What does "Agent B" treatment involve?

(the TGA doesn't allow the naming of this product on a medical website, but you can guess what it is)

The treatment involves from 6 to 10 small injections at one time into the area being treated. The needle used is very fine and so the procedure is almost painless. The effect will commence 3 to 10 days later with lines being softened as movement is reduced. Some specific facial movements, such as frowning after treatment for frown lines, will be greatly reduced - this may feel strange at first but one quickly becomes used to it. The effect lasts for 3 months or so, with further injections after this time often lasting longer. Sometimes after a few treatments some of the nerve receptors may not regrow and part of the effect will be permanent.

Can anyone use it?The treatment is very safe but is not used during pregnancy. You should not have anti-wrinkle injections if you suffer from myasthenia gravis or if you are taking certain rarely-used aminoglycoside antibiotics. Of course, anti-wrinkle injections should not be used if other treatments would better fix your lines. Lines that appear etched into the face even when the face is at rest generally need a different approach. We can advise you about your options.

Are there any side effects? The treatment area may be a little pink for a few hours. Occasionally a small bruise or two may form. As with any injections there is a potential for allergic reactions and local infection but these are very uncommon. As the anti-wrinkle injections start to work 3-10 days later you may experience a slight headache for the day.If the medication is injected near the top of the eye it may rarely occur that some of the fluid spreads to affect the muscle controlling the upper eyelid. Consequently the eyelid may droop, and this effect is called "ptosis". When this occurs it typically lasts several weeks and recovers fully, and treatment to counteract this effect is available. By avoiding the placement of anti-wrinkle injections near your upper eyelid we can greatly reduce the risk of this side-effect occurring. Some people have relatively low-set eyebrows, and if such people are treated with a lot of anti-wrinkle injections into the forehead they may find that their eyebrows become even more low-set. This is called "pseudoptosis", and, again, typically lasts several weeks. By treating such people very carefully and selectively, and by avoiding over-treatment in the first instance, we can reduce the risk of this side-effect as well. If under-treatment results from such a careful approach then a further dose can be given after two weeks.

What about after the treatment? After your treatment we ask that

  • you do not rub or massage the area for four hours
  • you do not lie flat for four hours
  • you exercise the treated area for four hours. Smile. Frown. etc.
Three or four or five months later you will note a gradual return of your lines, although some patients report getting out of the habit of frowning, etc, whilst under anti-wrinkle injection treatment and then not returning to habitual frowning after the effect has worn off. Most patients, however, like their look and return three or so months later for another treatment
