Some people with slim long necks notice that if ever they grimace a certain way they will get one or more vertical bands of tight skin appearing down the front of their neck.
These are platysmal bands.
The platysma is a thin sheet of muscle in front of your neck. It runs vertically, pretty much from your jawline down to your collarbones, covering the front of your neck like a tight pleated skirt.
When this muscle contracts, sometimes one or more of these "pleats" becomes very much tighter than the others. It tends to then bow forward, like a drawstring, and the effect can look a little odd.
These are called "platysmal bands", and they are very easily treated with muscle-relaxing agents that relax the tight and hyperactive part of the muscle, leaving a smoother neck. The effect typically lasts a few months
Platysmal bands are easy to identify and easy to treat.
