So what is laser and IPL hair removal all about? Here’s what you need to know about laser and IPL hair removal at Peach Cosmetic Medicine.

How Lasers and IPL treatments work

Whether laser or IPL, the principle is the same. An extremely bright ray of light from the laser or IPL is shone in a flash at a patch of skin bearing unwanted hair. Pigment in brown or black hair is heated by incoming light, leading to the hair getting instantly hot enough to heat and treat its own follicle to delay or eliminate future hair growth. Meanwhile, the light has little or no effect on the lighter skin surrounding the hair follicle. Thus, hair follicles can be treated without creating any significant problem for the surrounding skin.

At any given time and in any given individual, some hair follicles are much more susceptible to this treatment than others. Hair follicles cycle through three stages of hair growth, and it is only during the anagen phase, or active growth phase, that the follicle is most susceptible to this treatment. After a single laser or IPL treatment, those hairs treated during their anagen phase are likely to have been permanently damaged, whilst those happening to be in the other phases (catagen and telogen) are unlikely to have been permanently affected, but may well move into anagen phase by the time of the next treatment

Thus, a series of treatments is required to successfully and permanently reduce or eliminate a significant proportion of the hair follicles. Whilst in some areas, particularly armpits and bikini lines, 50% or more reduction may occur from a single treatment, typically two or three or more treatments are required for this sort of reduction and those seeking to eliminate as much hair as possible may require 6 or more treatments, again depending on a range of factors such as hair colour, skin colour, treatment location on the body, age, body characteristics and medical characteristics of the patient.
